Left ship by tender arriving on Santorini and taking our motor coach to the Akrotiri Ruins, a town buried under tons of volcanic ash in 1627 BC. We walk through archaeological site of this Bronze Age town more than three millennia old, sealed by the island's volcano. Excavated in 1967. Artwork, frescoes, homes, shops preserved to this day. Our guide showed us ancient life preserved. The structured display of the ruins is masterful. I had been thinking I would be climbing over ruins. Instead wooden walkways allowed us to see everything but also protects the ruins from so much traffic of people. Some claim this is the lost city of Atlantis. It could be in my estimation.
Masterful display of Ancient Greece. A very advanced civilization lived here. They must have fled before eruption of volcano even more proof of their advancement, no bodies found like Pompei that came later. Was amazed that Akrotiri seemed to have plumbing with tubs and "toilets."
Now onto Greece of today.
Magnificent everywhere-you-look Santorini. Yes, pictures do speak better than words. SANTORINI, GREECE, an idyllic, wonderful place. Loved being here. (Could this be my favorite of whole cruise? Yes, but stiff competition.)
We took our motor coach north to Oia (eeea) with incredible views then ended motor coach ride at Fira (Thera spelled Fira.) We explored on our own with having lunch (open face gyros) at a charming seaside, open-air restaurant. After wandering around and buying souvenirs, we took the cable car down enjoying the views. On the shore we found a tender to take us reluctantly back to Splendour of the Seas.
Lunch in Santorini. Sue had Yellow Donkey Beer. She asked the proprietor if something was good on the menu. He said I wouldn't have it on the menu if it weren't good. We all ordered the Gyros after his response about them. They were good.
Notice our cruise ship in the background of this picture of Sue and me.
Waiting for the tender back to the ship after taking the cable car down the mountain.
Happy to see the Hurleys in line on the other side from our cable car after we got separated in town.
Notice the beautiful little sugar cube village clinging to cliffs in upper left of picture. We were there and now by cable car at the shore.
Hated to head back to ship after our five hours on Santorini.
Showtime tonight: Inna Tolstova with electronic and classical music, jazz, crossover, dub step and symphonic rock. Again string instruments.
Good night, tomorrow Athens.
